What to Expect

Voice lessons are private sessions during which you learn how to sing. Many technical aspects of singing may be addressed, including posture, breath, vocal function, use of vowels, and release of articulators. You will be given vocal exercises, called "vocalises," designed to address the specific needs of your voice, and expert advice on how to improve. Beginners typically make the best progress with weekly lessons, though I offer a wide range of attendance options to accommodate the needs of your schedule and budget.

Vocal coaching focuses on the interpretation and artistry of singing. Many self-taught contemporary singers may seek short-term vocal coaching to address a specific imbalance or issue. Singers may seek vocal coaching in preparation for an audition or performance. Please note that I am not an accomplished piano player, and your coaching will be most productive if you bring your own accompanist, come prepared to work with a pre-recorded track, or are prepared to sing unaccompanied.

Is This for Me?

Adult beginners: Overcome your self-consciousness and anxiety to reveal your healthiest authentic voice. For any style or genre of singing, develop freedom, power, and sustainability.
Adolescents: Develop a solid technical foundation that will last a lifetime of singing in any genre or style.
Performers: Address technical shortcomings in order to earn more roles and solos in musical theatre, opera, and choir.

Location

I teach in my home studio in Nevada City, 5 minutes north of town. The address is provided after booking.
You can also enjoy voice lessons from the convenience and comfort of your own home! Remote lessons have proven to be just as effective as in-person. They occur via Zoom. Generally, all that is needed is a strong internet connection and a device capable of running the Zoom application (please note Google Chromebooks are not suited to this). Most modern smartphones have better built-in microphones than computers, and thus may be better suited. Professional singers and aspiring performers may benefit from a mid- to high-quality microphone and audio interface setup. I am happy to consult on your options.
